Six traditional basmati varieties – Taraori, Dehradun, Ranbir, 217, 370, 386 – were so far notified under the Seed Act.Pusa 1121 becomes the third hybrid to be called as basmati, the earlier ones being Pusa Basmati and Haryana Basmati. Before the government banned export of non-basmati rice, Indian traders were exporting Pusa 1121 as a Basmati variety to all destinations barring Europe, which follows strict quality norms including DNA-testing.
